SCLApass Fancypants Sportsclub/LA giveaway

“So,” you ask, “How did you decide to join the most upscale gym in Boston?”

I reply, “Do you mean Sportsclub/LA? The one in the same building as the Ritz Carlton?”

You say (with a bit of a hurumphh in your voice) “Yes, that’s the one.”

Well, let me explain. As many of you know, I was laid off from my fulltime job in advertising awhile back. And instead of scrambling to find another one, I decided to pursue my part time gig (and fulltime passion) of health and wellness.

Sure, I was concerned about money. Filing for that first unemployment check is a big hit to the ego. But luckily with savings and with income generated from my private health counseling clients, things were going to be ok.

Sweet!

Enter Alden. Alden is a friend of mine from yoga training. I said, “Hey Alden, haven’t seen you in awhile.” She said, “Oh well you know what, I just joined the Sportsclub/LA, you should come take a yoga class with me there! I have a free pass for guests.”

To which I replied, “Heck yeah!”

But inside I was thinking, “Boy Alden, you must make a lot of money to afford such a fancy gym…” Jealousy. Judging. Comparing. These feelings all came up. What can I say? I’m human.

So, I found myself walking past the Ritz Carlton and into SCLA, wishing that perhaps my workout clothes were a bit more posh. I gave a sideways glance to the other person in the elevator and thought…wow, I wonder what THAT guy does for a living.

When I got inside I saw no diamond studded treadmills or anything like that. But. It is a very, very nice gym. I’ve belonged to gyms that make you feel you need a shower just by walking into the room. Icky. But I’ve never belonged to a gym where I actually felt happy to be there, surrounded by big windows overlooking the Boston Common, pleasant people and plenty of space. They have an entire second floor dedicated to Mind-Body classes. This is where I headed for yoga, noting along the way the free herbal tea bar and individual yoga rooms for private practice.

And after class, I saw the locker rooms were stocked with cottonballs, tissues, razors, plastic bags for wet clothes, hairdryers, hairspray, deodorant and combs. Did I mention the steam room? Oh, it was heaven. They have a steam room, a sauna and a pool. But I’m a steam room kind of gal myself.

Long story short, I remembered that part of my job as a health counselor is convincing people to prioritize their health. Often I speak with people who would like to start a 6 month health counseling program but feel like they can’t afford it. I understand. I felt like I could not afford this gym. No way, no how.

But…it was just awesome. So I decided to put my money where my mouth is. I figured, being laid off meant I would finally have time to fully utilize a gym membership. I’d belonged to other gyms that cost $60/month and I never went. That’s a waste of money. What if I spent more, but loved it, and used it all the time? Hmmmm.

Ha! So I joined. If only to prove a point – that health is worth investing in.

I don’t have cable TV. I ride the city bus. I shop with a strict budget in mind. And I use the library. If I want to enjoy my workouts…that seemed like the right place to splurge.

Now of course, I don’t know all of your personal finance situations but I hope that sharing my story will underscore how vehemently I believe in prioritizing health. Maybe it means spending less on clothes and more on organic produce. Or spending less time watching TV and more time walking for exercise.

I’m very happy to offer a free pass to Sportsclub/LA to 4 lucky winners! I have 2 passes good only at the Boston location, and 2 passes good in either New York, Miami, Washington DC or San Franciso. If you would like to spend a day at a Sportsclub/LA near you, please leave a comment below and answer the question:

I also got laid off recently, and in attempts to stay mentally, physically and budgetly healthy, I’ve done a lot of cooking. I mean a lot. Sure, you can spend little money on quick, pre-prepared foods that are loaded with sugar, salt and preservatives but I have found that slowing down and cooking things in big batches has been the most satisfying new hobby I could have chosen.

I am still to try the Plant Blood though!

I prioritize health by writing my workouts (cardio kickboxing class and running) in my planner and very rarely letting myself skip them/reschedule when other events come up.

I also plan out my meals so that I don’t get left hungry without a healthy option available to me.

I already belong to Healthworks (which I love) but it’s so cool that you’re doing this giveaway!
You should take Aaron Cantor’s yoga class… I’ve been studying with him for about two years and did teacher training with him and he’s incredible.

I am a college student (aka don’t have a lot of money), and I still have a monthly membership to the gym, even though we have access to the university gym. The equipment is pretty old at the university gym, and it is really inconvenient to lug all my stuff to campus (I commute), so I splurge on my monthly gym fees for health :) I also make sure I go on most mornings of the week (opens later on Sunday and Saturday).

I love your blog! I moved to Washington DC last year for a new job, which requires me to work long hours without prior notice, so fitting in the gym can be tricky. I belong to a less expensive one at the moment, and have made it a priority to fit in 4 workouts a week. If I can’t do it on the weekdays, I go in the morning on the weekends. Also, I walk to work every day to ensure that I at least get some exercise. Anyway, this gym sounds amazing and I would love an upgrade!

That’a a great give away….unfortunately I don’t live close enough to enjoy it if I won’t! I do have a gym membership to a local gym where one of my great friends is a personal trainer!! So for me I get to enjoy a little bit of free personal training when she’s not busy:) I can’t think of anything more important than my health!!!
    Have a great day~

    Hi Michelle,

I am a big believer in my health coming as a first priority. I am currently traveling to Ghana quite a bit for work, I fill half my suitcase each time with food like oatmeal, seaweed and spirulina; so that I can have some options to substitute for the lack of veggies and bad hotel food. I also bring my yoga mat and goggles and make daily workouts a priority. I cant wait to get back to New York on a full time basis where I can join a real gym and safely eat veggies again!

How we choose to spend our finite resources – both money and time – reflects our priorities in life. There are lots of things I want and can’t afford, but I will never cut corners on my health. I figure either I can spend the money now and eat well and take care of myself, or I can spend the money later on medical bills. The first option is way more enjoyable! (I don’t live close enough to use the gym pass, too bad!)

I always find it interesting to see how people choose to spend their incomes. I feel very lucky in that I have a free gym membership because I teach, but if I did not…I think I would def choose to spend my money at the gym! I also choose to spend it on healthy & organic (most of the time) foods. I also pull back on the regular clothes shopping etc so that I can do so and I think its well worth it.

Gee, I wish I lived in Boston! ;D

Michelle- I love your post because it speaks to so many of the same thoughts I have had walking past the Ritz/La Fitness in Boston nearly every week! I am a grad student with little time and with a husband who is still looking for a job, so money is VERY scarce. Despite not being able to afford a snazzy gym membership and not having time to go to my school’s fitness center, I HAVE found a local yoga studio that offers drop in prices and carve 1.5 hrs out of my week for yoga, which I just recently started doing on a regular basis. I used to have an unhealthy addiction to running and exercise in general, but this summer, due to some health issues, I began simply walking (which is a really easy thing to do in Boston). Sometimes I get off a stop or two early on the bus just to get in a little 15-20 min walk :) I’ve never felt better and had more energy!

Now I feel validated for going to an expensive gym — I’m making a big investment because then I know I’ll cash in on it by going all the time. I knew I had a good reason. :)

I just lost 20% of my income for the upcoming year and was feeling totally bummed about it. I sat around the house for days just feeling miserable – not walking – not talking with anyone – playing sudoku – feeding on my own misery -
THEN, I said “enough is enough” and went over to Healthworks, Cambridge for a Nia class. The place is beautiful – the classes fun – the trainers awesome. Then I told myself I couldn’t afford it – after all I was down 20% on my income.

On the drive (I should have been walking I know) home, I recognized that I was going back to the place where I would sink back down into feeling miserable – not walking – not talking with anyone – playing sudoku – feeding on my own misery — OR – I could join Healthworks.

Bottom line, Healthworks is awesome – I have less money and spend less on other things – I feel great!

If I win your pass I’ll use in it NYC where I sometimes work and don’t exercise at all. I know it will energize me and I hope I win -

Health is my top priority! I focus on eating well, splurge on yoga classes, and always walk when I can. I would use the pass in NY.
