greenbook Green smoothie book giveaway is here after all!

Like I said in my previous post, the publishers of Victoria Boutenko’s Green Smoothie Revolution sent me the book to review awhile ago. I felt like a dummy for waiting so long but honestly, wouldn’t we rather talk about raw food when spring is just around the corner?

Well, happily the publishers are still letting me offer a giveaway for you guys! Yay!

You all know how much I adore dark green veggies. For energy, for detoxification and for healthy digestion, greens are the way to go! In the past few months I have used this book quite a bit. I’ve also found myself telling my clients and friends about making green smoothies. I made one every morning during my Ashtanga training with David Swenson and after that I was hooked!

One of the best tidbits (besides recipes) in this book is about rotating your greens.

I had no idea that eating the same raw spinach or kale every day could be a problem, but apparently so. This should not deter you from eating that salad for lunch! The problem only exists if you’re eating a good amount of the same raw greens every day over a period of time.

According to the book, plants contain alkaloids to deter animals from eating too many of one plant species. It’s all about survival. Poisonous in large quantities, alkaloids are fine in the trace amounts you’d typically ingest from greens. (As a side note, the Macrobiotic diet avoids nightshade vegetables like tomatoes and eggplant because of high alkaloid content. My assumption is that greens contain fewer but still some of this natural defense system.)

The solution is to rotate the greens you are using in your smoothies so no one type of alkaloid has a change to build up in your system. I repeat – for most of us this is NOT a problem and I hesitate to share this information for fear it will keep you from eating raw green vegetables! But, if green smoothies were to be come a daily or twice daily occurrence, you should hear the important of rotation.

Just one more reason to eat a varied diet!

In addition to smoothies, this book also has recipes for soups and puddings. I’ll admit – I’ve stayed away from the recipes that ask for things like wild picked plantain leaves, catnip or nopal cactus paddles. (I mean, seriously?) But there are plenty of recipes with ingredients you can find in your local grocery store: spinach, kale, parsley, ginger, lemon.

Ok, so who wants to win a copy of the very cool Green Smoothie Revolution??

Are dark green poisonous if you eat a lot of the same kind almost everyday or if you eat a lot of any kind everyday?

    thanks!

Cactus pedals are all over AZ grocery stores, and nopalitos salads are amazing!!! That being said, I have never seen wild-picked plantain leaves. ;) Thanks for the offer of the giveaway. This book looks awesome, and it would be great to have information on how to be healthy quickly, not to mention a good reason to use my Vitamix impersonator.
