Having a juicy summer

juicing Having a juicy summer

My blogging has been flagging lately, and I’d like to blame summer fun – but really it’s because my site got hacked and I’m dealing with switching servers, etc…

But other than these administrative details (bor-ing!) this summer is off to a pretty magnificent start. The other day was hot, to the point that I didn’t feel like eating much of anything. That’s when a bell went off in my head:

JUICING!

Wow, all winter goes by and I pretty much forget about my kick ass Breville juicer. Do you have a juicer? If so, time to break it out. If not, think about making an investment. Juicing is something you really can’t replicate – not even the highest quality bottled stuff comes close to fresh, homemade juice.

But let me be clear: juice is in no way a replacement for eating real food! Just like vitamins, it’s a good way to get nutrients. But juice is not a whole food – it’s got the vitamins, antioxidants and sugars from the fruit and veggies you juice, but not the fiber.

In any case, fresh juice is incredibly refreshing and energizing on a hot day. Now remember, anytime you juice you condense all the sugar from fruit into a couple of sips. Without fiber, that sugar hits your bloodstream hard and could leave you feeling jittery. Combining fruit with veggies is key! You want to stay away from juicing, say, 10 apples to make apple juice. Instead, try blending apples with dark leafy greens for a sweet green juice.

1/2 head of curly kale
1 apple
1 pear
1 lemon, peeled

My favorite part about juicing is definitely getting creative. Celery, cucumbers, beets, carrots, collard greens, oranges, lemons, apples, pears – it’s all fair game!

My least favorite part about juicing is cleaning the juicer. Here’s my strategy: Clean the juicer and all its parts before you drink your juice. Yep, it takes a little self control but if you clean the juicer before everything dries it makes it soooo much easier. And then your yummy juice is the reward.

What else are you craving on hot days?

Fresh fruit on protein-dense greek yogurt is rocking my breakfast world. Frozen grapes and banana slices are topping my list for desserts and snacks. Here are some of my past raw, living food recipes to try:

Asian Cabbage and Peanut Salad
Spinach Avocado Soup
Mediterranean Wheatberry Salad
Creamy Herb Wraps

Good point about how juice isn’t a replacement for WHOLE fruits and veggies!

I had a juicer, but I couldn’t get into it… I have never been a big juice fan. I do enjoy a green smoothie, though!

Summers are also good for salads :)

I’ve been going back and forth on the juicer investment for a while now. I’m afraid I won’t use it enough to make it worth it. But that glass of fresh juice you made looks really good.

Sorry to hear about your site! I wondered why my RSS feed wasn’t working. Hope you manage to get it ironed out!

Oh definitely clean the juicer before drinking the juice – that’s one of my rules too… I like a combination of apple, ginger, beetroot and carrot. My juicer doesn’t handle greens so well, so I tend to avoid juicing them.

Mmmm some fresh homemade juice sounds really good at the moment! Definitely refreshing.

I can’t believe your blog got hacked! So sorry chica!

I keep putting off getting a juicer since we’ve been back in the US. I need to get on it. I miss fresh juice from Brazil so much. I made it all the time, but mostly because I could walk away with pounds of fruits from the farmer’s market for a few dollars.

Collard greens and pineapple is an awesome one by the way. Oh and ginger, pineapple and cucumber if you haven’t tried them before.

I need to break out my juicer! I HATE cleaning it too, so I put a kroger bag in the pulp catcher and just pull it out and toss it. I know I could use the pulp for other stuff, but I’m just not that motivated :)

I love the idea of putting a bag in the pulp catcher! One thing I’d also like to experiment with is making green juice popsicles.

Good news on the site hack front – it’s finally fixed! I’ll be back to regular blogging shortly! Gosh, that only took FOREVER! :-)

This juice looks excellent, Michelle. But I have issues with juicing for the exact reason you mentioned-the fiber being removed from the situation. Maybe I shouldn’t worry so much about that though, and just deal with my addiction to A.P. flour and white sugar (smile)….!

I hear ya! Juicing and watermelon — that sums up about 90% of my food cravings during this HOT weather. What are your thoughts on using a Vitamix to retain the fiber?
