ricesalad An easy recipe makes it all better

Did you know that dry cleaning does not get cat urine out? Just a little FYI. One of my cats has been deemed a “stress cat” due to her incessant belly licking (which is creating a bald spot) and episodes of inappropriate urination. As in, has been peeing everywhere including the couch and bed.

Oh, and then our car got hit. Not a big deal, just a crushed bumper while parked at Whole Foods. But still.

We all have our problems, right? I was reminded today of a wonderful technique for gaining perspective when you’re in the middle of a mess:

Ask yourself, “Why is this happening for me?”

Not, “Why is this happening to me” but rather “for me.” It immediately takes you out of playing the victim and into a much more open, useful place.

Hmmmm. Maybe cat pee is happening for me so I can learn to be a more compassionate caretaker? My couch ruined and car hit so I can learn to be less attached to material things? I’m not sure. This is a line of inquiry I’m still working with.

The house feels a bit turned upside down and I haven’t felt much like cooking lately. But chinese leftovers are running out! Something needed to be done.

Here’s a seriously healthy, clean recipe that can be recreated umpteen ways. I particularly like how it’s good for cleaning out the odds and ends in the refrigerator. And, for those of you interested in seeing some big change in your body, this recipe is a classic example of the type of food we’ll be eating during my 21 Day Detox this September!

Crisp and Colorful Rice Salad
This makes a huge salad, so use your biggest bowl. Eat it cold or at room temperature, for lunch, dinner, snacks, a side dish or main entree.
4 cups precooked brown rice, quinoa or a mixture of both
2 tomatoes, chopped
1 cucumber, diced
1 red pepper, diced
1 cup frozen corn kernels, defrosted
2 cups chopped spinach
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
for dressing:
1 Tbl. dijon mustard
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
S+P to taste

In a large pan over medium heat, toast sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Combine with all other salad ingredients in a big bowl. Whisk dressing ingredients together and pour over salad. Mix to distribute evenly.

I feel sooo much better with some decent food prepared. It’s really the most basic thing you can do to take care of yourself and your life. Trust me, cat pee doesn’t get any better when you’re trying to digest an eggroll. Might as well give yourself a fighting chance of feeling good, even while sorting out life’s challenges.

That’s a great new way of looking at it! Why is this happening FOR me. I like that! It’s a lot more productive to see how life’s lessons are of value than to fret and whine. Your positive attitude will carry you through! Gorgeous salad!

Hey Michelle, salad looks fabulous, and I’m all over it for dinner tonight! I highly recommend Nature’s Miracle for the cat pee… blot up as much of it as you can, then spray/soak the spot with the product. It’s got enzymes in it that will digest the urine/smell eventually. I wish I didn’t know about it from experience! :)

michelle-i just love your attitude and i’m sorry about the cat pee and the car. :)

i have been looking for a great rice salad recipe and this looks lie it!

  • Michelle

Rose – thanks lady! Although trust me, I do plenty of fretting and whining too :-)

Kim – Thanks so much – we actually tried Nature’s Miracle with no luck, even after multiple applications. I think maybe the fabric is too think? Sigh. Thank you though.

Michaela – I was looking for a great rice salad recipe too. Sometimes you just gotta make it up, right? :-)

We probably would have bought new furniture and rugs a long time ago if not for our kitties and their sharp little claws. So, in a way, they’ve saved us tons of money. Thanks, cats! :)

Colorful, tasty, AND good for you? Sign me up.

I thought I wanted pets. But maybe with cats peeing everywhere it’s not a good idea. Especially not in my tiny apartment where the only available space to pee would be my bed…

So sorry to hear what happened on your side but really encouraging to hear how you saw it with a different perspective. That’s a very healthy, colourful and delicious-looking rice salad you made. I think it will cheer up any unpleasant moments :D

Maybe the cat pee is happening for you so that you can get an iPhone. No, really. We’ve got four cats and I think I might be a cat pee expert. And here’s what I found out: the best way to really — really — remove cat pee (and anything else they might deposit on your floors or furniture) is steam. A good steam cleaner really gets out the stain, the smell, all of it — plus steam sterilizes. But here’s the really weird thing I discovered by accident (this is where the iPhone comes in): the camera on the iPhone can see cat pee, even when it looks like you got it all out. It’s true. I don’t advise looking through the iPhone unless you have a steam cleaner at the ready because you might be distressed at what you see.

I’m sorry you’re having a rough period. For what it’s worth, you’ve just helped me. I love the rephrasing of the question, and it instantly changes everything. I’ll send good vibes your way. Oh, and for the nervous cat you’ve probably already tried Valerian, but if not, it’s worked on mine before.

Oh, and PS — I’m back! : ) Posted at long last, but I think I’ll be regular about it. It feels good to be a part of these discussions.

Sounds like I could use the dressing for lots of different salads.

  • Michelle

Thanks for all the advice and condolences about the couch! You guys are awesome.

Becky – Nice to have you back!!

    Michelle,

My yoga gurus always teach us “stuff” does not come AT us, it comes FROM us and happen to teach us something. Whether we like it or not and we always remain dwelling on the BAD. So, as you said all your “stuff” happened for you to learn from. Yet another one of your kind and knowledgeable posts all your blog followers, far and near, can benefit from!
Thank you again for yet another wonderful post!

Hey Michelle. Yes! Why did this happen for me? That’s a nice & thoughtful sentiment. I want to have that sentiment more often, but I’m a bit bratty. I’ll try though… Oh, and this salad looks so nice! I love rice-it’s my favorite starch!
p.s. I showed your detox to my Mom. I don’t know if she’ll do it, but she seemed a bit interested. We’ll see… Have a great weekend, Michelle.

Great way to re-frame the sentence! I love it.

Poor kitty! And that’s too bad about the dry-cleaning. Salad sounds yummy though :)
