breakfastbars Hooray! Super sweet stevia giveaway!

Sugar is a topic I could go on and on about (and sometimes I do). Taking sugar out of my diet has been the best thing I’ve ever done for my health. Period. And I see the same effect in anyone who undertakes the same challenge.

Take my detox participants, for instance. Last spring, they hated my guts for the first sugar-free week. But after that, they were true believers – full of energy and amazed at the lack of brain fog. I’m anticipating a similar response from those of you who sign up for September!

But it’s more than just white sugar. It’s brown sugar. It’s Sugar in the Raw. It’s corn syrup. It’s Sweet-n-Low. It’s Splenda.

This inevitably raises a torrent of questions:
- What about agave nectar?
- Which is a better choice, sugar or Splenda?
- I heard maple syrup is ok, is it?

Sure, I prefer natural sweeteners over processed. I eat tons of fruit and will use a bit of pure maple syrup any day over the white stuff. I abhor artificial sweeteners.

But that’s not the point. The point is, the more sweet stuff you taste, the more sweet stuff you’ll want. It’s an endless cycle. Breaking free means you’ll turn down the volume on your tastebuds. You’ll actually appreciate the sweet flavor of carrots and butternut squash instead having your tastebuds blown out by the top-volume sweet flavor of orange soda.

So why, oh why, would I agree to try and review NuNaturals stevia products?

Because I’m human. Jeesh, right? I mean, just like you, I’m hoping for an all-natural, whole food to deliver miraculous sweetness! Plus, I get a ton of questions about stevia and to be honest I’d never really given it a fair shake.

So, what is stevia? Well it’s a plant. A green plant with very sweet leaves. You could grow it, and eat the leaves. But since most of us prefer our sweetener in white, powdery form, that’s how manufacturers process it to look. Stevia has no calories, won’t raise your blood sugar, and has been used for a very, very long time in Japan. So far so good!

A few caveats: I’m not sure that stevia has ever been used in “American” quantities the way it is lately – in sodas and such. And there were some old studies that claim reproductive issues in hamsters from large quantities of stevia. But I feel that stevia, in moderation, is preferable to sugar and other sugar substitutes.

NuNaturals Hooray! Super sweet stevia giveaway!

The first thing I noticed about NuNaturals was how many versions of stevia they sent me! You’ve got your Pure White Stevia Extract, Clear Stevia, White Stevia NoCarbs, Vanilla Stevia liquid, Stevia Baking Blend and maybe 5 other varieties. Whew!

So I tried these suckers with an open mind and I find they fall squarely and happily into a category I would call “transition” food. That’s right. I’m not recommending that you buy 100 lbs. of stevia to eat by the handful every day. But I am recommending you buy stevia as a perfect transition food when you are working to wean yourself off sugar.

I think my very favorite NuNaturals product was the vanilla liquid – it was delicious in my chocolate flavored teas and my husband even liked it in his coffee. I also tried the baking blend, but noticed that a lot of the recommended recipes used it alongside naturally sweet flavors, like bananas or pumpkin. I tried it by adding to a breakfast bar recipe I’m currently obsessed with (pictured at the top of this post) and it was a success. The bars went from something I liked to something my husband also really liked with the added boost of sweetness.

Banana Breakfast Bars
2 cups rolled oats (not instant)
1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
1 Tbl. ground flax seed
2 ripe bananas
1/4 cup milk
optional: 2 tsp. Stevia Baking Blend

Preheat oven to 350F. Mix all ingredients and press into a pie plate, 9×9 baking dish or silicone muffin tin. Bake for 30 minutes. When cool, slice into bars. If you used a muffin tin, simply pop your round ‘bars’ out.

While I try not to eat too much many sweets, I do have a killer sweet tooth, and have found that stevia is preferable to going on a sugar binge! I’d love to win some. I am subscribed to your rss feed and just subscribed to your newsletter, which I was very excited to learn about!

  • Amanda

    These bars look fab. YUM.

  • Sara D.

Just did a re-tweet…and I think I meet the other criteria, too. I love stevia! I am growing some in my garden right now, but I need to figure out how to convert it into something useable.

  • Corrie

I’m wondering how xylitol fits into all the sugar issues… Ideally, fruit would be the sweetest thing I’d ever eat, but I do love a cookie now and then. :)

I get the newsletter and “like” ya on Facebook already, does that count?

  • Heidi

Yum, I have a stevia plant in my garden and I love using the leaves in tea. I grab a couple leaves of stevia and a handful of mint. Soo good! Oh, also I have a US address(I know my IP says I’m in Canada :D ) My most pressing question… What about small amounts of honey? It can be beneficial(especially local unpasteurized honey), but do you recommend the use of any of it even after someone has detoxed from sugar?

  • http://www.fakefoodfree.com Lori

Those breakfast bars look so good! Interesting to use stevia as a the nicotine patch, so to speak. :) I hadn’t thought of that.

  • http://www.nourishingdays.com Shannon

I gave up all sugars a while back to help me lose weight. I use NuNaturals stevia often to sweeten teas and such. It is the one sweetener I don’t have a weird response to.

  • Kelly

Hi Michelle – I have the NOW brand Stevia liquid and it has a horrible aftertaste. If I buy it again I’ll look for this brand. However, I’m loving yacon syrup at the moment. I did a lot of research on it and seems to be ok for the anti-yeast/sugar diet I’m on. Tastes great, costs $$.

  • jen

I have been using the NuNaturals liquid, alcohol-free, Vanilla Stevia for months and I am obsessed. I put it in my Starbucks passion tea lemonade, my morning coffee, my oatmeal, and anything else needing a little sweetness. I’m interested n making your breakfast bars with the powdered stevia. I just bought a few PRO BARS at $3.92 a pop, so his sounds much more economical and healthy.

  • Jodie

Sounds good! I plan on trying to make the breakfast bars, yum! I retweeted & following you an Twitter, like you on Facebook, and subscribed to the RSS feed and already subscribed to the newsletter!

  • Jodie

Oh, I almost forgot, my pressing sugar question! Is peanut butter with fruit, like apples and bananas a good choice or is it overload? My daughter and I both really like sliced apples or bananas and dip them or spread on peanut butter – I mean, in moderation of course:) What are your thoughts?

  • http://thewitchykitchen.blogspot.com/ Stella

Hey Michelle, I’d love to have some stevia. I really believe that refined sugars and refined starches are the enemy of true health. I’m still weeding the last bit out of my pantry before I go cold turkey on them (don’t want to waste food that I’ve already purchased though). Okay, so here’s my question:
Can one have any sugar and feel okay about it? I mean, is it bad if I put two tbsp. of maple syrup on my organic, buckwheat pancakes? Or I just ate a small cookie made with turbinado. Is this small indulgence really that bad? Let me know. I can handle the truth (smile)!
Oh, and I receive your posts by e-mail already, and I’m not on Facebook or Twitter.

The recipe sounds amazing… like all your recipes actually!

  • http://livingfreeforever.wordpress.com Kimberly

I use stevia any time I need a sweetener. I even found the pure raw green stuff at my health food store. Love it! Your breakfast bars look delish!

  • Vicky

I have subscribed to your newsletter and am trying to fan you on Facebook but am having trouble with the page – whether or not the trouble is on my end, I don’t know but I’ll keep trying.

How does stevia do in baking recipes?

  • http://dietdessertndogs.com Ricki

I’m not eligible to win, but wouldn’t enter anyway since I’ve still got some of this amazing stevia I received when I did a giveaway a while back! Just wanted to pipe in to say I love using stevia in general, and NuNaturals truly is the BEST tasting stevia I’ve ever tried. Plus they are just so nice over there! :)

  • http://itzyskitchen.blogspot.com Erica

I actually really enjoy nunaturals stevia- ESPECIALLY their packets. My question would be…as a fruit addict- in terms of natural sugars- what is the recommended daily limit? Like if I eat an entire watermelon, is that bad ;)

I use Stevia in my coffee and I really do feel like it’s the better alternative! I’m glad you tried it!

  • http://www.getwellgrounded.blogspot.com Jennifer | Get Well Grounded

I tend towards honey or maple syrup if I’m using sweeteners at all and I totally agree with your classification of these stevia products as transitional sweeteners, but I am intrigued by this vanilla liquid stevia you mentioned. Also, did NuNaturals send you any green stevia? — I’ve never seen it in stores, but I know you can get green stevia leaf powder online. Just curious. Thanks.

I’ve only had Stevia in a soda. I didn’t like the aftertaste. Is it different when you bake with it? I’d love to get my family to lower their sugar intake!

  • Jen

Just tried this recipe yesterday. Delicious! However, I took them out after 20 minutes instead of 30 because they started to brown and I got worried I would burn them. I should have left them in because they fell apart when I tried to take them out of the pan. I added dark chocolate chips and peanut butter to mine, and didn’t use any stevia.

I bought this pan from Target and it’s come in handy often! It makes perfect sized bars.

i use very little added sweetener in my life, but have recently discovered that a single drop of liquid stevia is decent in iced coffee, but beyond that, it’s too sweet for me! i use a tiny bit of agave in salad dressings to take the edge off of the vinegar sometimes. i guess my most pressing question is what the best sugar is for baking (i.e., is sucanat a good alternative?).

  • melanie

oh, and i already get your newsletter and follow you on twitter (@melle76a), but i just liked your fb fan page and retweeted your contest on twitter.

  • Liz

I haven’t tried this stevia product and certainly wouldn’t buy it. I use very little sugar, but when I do (ie for baking) I’d rather use honey or maple syrup, which seem less processed, or even plain old sugar. I don’t like the weird chemical taste of all the stevias I’ve tried, which reminds me of aspartame or sugar-twin — nasty! — and as a result I can’t really think of stevia as more natural than sugar.

  • Katie

Still wondering about how much Agave is too much…use it in my tea once a day and in my oatmeal every morning…I have to have sweet. Should I use Stevia instead?

  • Pamela Outersky Smith

Just recently I switched to Stevia in an effort to rid my kitchen of the “white poisons” and I have been impressed. I really do like it and find I can use less and less with various foods as I wean myself off sugar. I was concerned about using it in recipes and was happy to hear in your newsletter here today that it can be used INSTEAD of sugar in any recipe. Thank you!

  • Deborah McGill

Hello Michelle! I met you at a Farmer’s Market in Medford Square.. I love your newsletter.. been getting it for a while. Great recipes! I now subscribe to your RSS feed, follow you on Twitter and liked your FB page! The Vanilla sweetener you mentioned sounds amazing! I would really love to try it! Keep those “helping people get off sugar” tips coming.. it’s such a great thing to do!

I can do without sugar except for one thing, my morning coffee. I drink two cups in the mornings, with four spoons of sugar in each.

I subscribe to the newsletter, the rss feed, facebook page, twitter and have tweeted about the giveaway.

I’ve been the happy recipient of NuNaturals samples as well and love their products. For someone like me who can’t eat sugar (or even most natural sweeteners), it’s a godsend. And NuNaturals has been, by far, the best tasting stevia I’ve tried (and no, they haven’t paid me to say so!!) ;)

  • http://www.mommiecooks.com Julie M.

Your bars look great! I can’t say we’ve taken the step to eliminate sugar yet, but we have stepped completely away from artificial sweeteners. I only use can sugar in the foods we eat. My mother in law swears by stevia, she loves it!
