peachpie1 Woman vs. Food Cravings

Chocolate. Bread. Candy. When I ask people what foods they crave, usually the answer is something along these lines. And I understand! For years I lived with a sugar addiction that kept my spoon going back and forth to the half gallon of ice cream on my lap long after I felt full.

I am now armed and ready to ward off cravings! I have tools I’ve perfected on myself and with my clients! I now walk by the Oreo aisle with no more than a glance and the ice cream in my freezer has literally lasted months.

But nothing, my friends, nothing has prepared me for the intensity of cravings I’m experiencing in my pregnancy. For those of you who have never been pregnant, pretend I’m talking about that time your boyfriend dumped you and you were PMSing and you walked by an ice cream shop. That kind of craving, times a billion. For those of you who are or have been pregnant, I assume you already know what I’m talking about.

It’s a physical force that begins in my belly and climbs into my brain and takes over my limbs, a hundred bodily voices at once calling for….

PEACH PIE!!!

At least that’s what it called for last night. I breathed. I waited. It was 9pm. Truly not the ideal time to run to the store and buy a pie for immediate consumption. And who knows if they’d have peach? And would it be good? I mean, really, really good? The pie of my dreams?

So I got to thinking about what about pie sounded so darn good. The warm fruit. The sweetness. The savory crust. Quick! What did I have in the fridge like that?

And a new dessert was born. This recipe has exactly 3 mandatory ingredients and they are all whole foods. No hydrogenated fat or sugary filling nonsense. And it was exactly, exactly what I wanted. Mmmmmm. My husband happened to be making ghee last night so instead of butter I used the slightly burnt skimmed solids. But you can use butter or ghee or coconut oil or…

The Best Part of Pie
3 nectarines or any fruit (I didn’t have peaches)
1 Tbl. butter
small handful of walnuts
optional: 1 scant Tbl. pure maple syrup

Chop fruit. Melt butter in pan over medium heat. Add fruit and walnuts and stir. Cook until fruit is soft, which brings out it’s natural sweetness. If you are using maple syrup, stir into the mixture and serve.

But to be perfectly honest, I haven’t had a ton of sweet cravings. One day I was craving spaghetti – just plain ol’ white flour spaghetti with marinara sauce. And I just gave in. Oh, and I ate 3 rolls just for good measure. I mean, I can’t always have the presence of mind to fix up a “smart healthy alternative.” I’m telling you, these cravings are powerful stuff. But I know that spaghetti didn’t do me any good in the long run. The baby does not need white flour. No one does.

The other major “must eat this now” moment I’ve dealt with lately was probably the most severe. It started softly when I thought I overheard someone say “Cheesesteak.” The thought marinated in my brain for about 24 hours and then it started echoing in every cell of my body:

Cheesesteak. CHEESESTEAK. PHILADELPHIA CHEESESTEAK GODDAMMIT!!

Sadly, there is nothing in Boston that remotely resembles a Philly cheesesteak. I know this from years of living here and also because I did an hour-long Google search that day. No luck. I decided that a regular steak would do. But it had to be really good.

Where can you eat a full-on steak dinner by yourself at 3:30pm without looking like an idiot?

Did I mention I was also crying by this point and snacking on every thing in the house that sadly was not steak? I paced the hallways of my house, singing to make the craving hunger pain go away. I sang “Who can eat a steak with me? Who can eat a steak with me?”

Social norms, be damned. I finally got in the car, drove to the closest place I could get decent takeout and came home with this:

steakdinner Woman vs. Food Cravings

I ate every single bite, which took me an hour. I didn’t even bother transferring it to a plate first! And I know this makes some people laugh because I typically am not a big meat eater. But I really heard what my body was asking for and there is nothing wrong with providing good ol’ heme iron to a growing baby. In fact, I’d like to point out that a T-bone steak with real mashed potatoes and broccoli is a helluva lot healthier than a cheesesteak – fake cheese on a white roll, hello? My steak dinner was real food.

So I guess that’s what I’m saying today, just like I say every day: eat real food. It doesn’t matter if it’s a vegetable or fruit or meat or grain – real food is always the better choice. And if I can satisfy my cravings, so can you.

i normally drink water and tea (sans caffeine) however now all i want are sugar-laden drinks like lemonade.

oh, and lets not forget ice cream.

oh and michelle, i can’t believe you have a little belly already! i didn’t show for the longest time!

It’s reassuring to know that even someone living a healthy lifestyle can fall victim to the pregnancy cravings!! I used to inhale the entire bowl of dinner rolls at a restaurant, and bread used to be the only indulgence I could avoid pre-pregnancy! I like the idea of pinpointing exactly what you are craving and then finding the healthiest option. I’ll have to try and remember that when I get pregnant with baby #2!

First of all, I didn’t even realize you where pregnant! Congratulations! When are you due??

I can’t imagine having cravings like that but it’s very smart of you to really analyze the cravings and then come up with a real food alternative. Awesome post!

  • Michelle

Busca – What is it about spaghetti? I have wanted it often but chalked it up to comfort food? No clue.

Michaela – ME TOO!!!! It’s like I don’t like the taste of water sometimes. I’m all about coconut water while my tastebuds figure this out. And yes, I’m huge already.

Brooke – We’re all just doing the best we can, right? Sometimes it’s a basket of rolls. Oh well :-) Planning for #2 already, eh?

Joanne – Thanks lady! I’m due in February though by the looks of that picture you’d think I was due in October.

This made me laugh out loud! I gained 60lbs with my first pregnancy. I had a lot of cravings and ate enough for 5 humans! Let me know if you decide to move to DC! It would be great to connect!

You may hate me for saying this, but when I was briefly pregnant I craved greens like crazy — mustard, chard, kale, spinach. I couldn’t get enough. But I’m sure there would have been other, less admirable hankerings as well. I love the necessity-inspired creativity that bore The Best of Pie. Such a great way to think about any dessert or any other dish, really — what is it that you actually want? Lovely!

I can’t even imagine pregnancy cravings!

Such a cute little belly! I can only imagine what those cravings must be like- wild for sure!! The innards of a peach pie are the best part- especially when nuts are involved. I totally must try this creation. You can come down and do a meet up with us in Charleston ;)

My babies are now 19 and 16. :( With my oldest I craved taquitos at a fast food restaurant! I had those atleast 3 times a day UGH! My 2nd child I craved orange juice and raw carrots with ranch dressing..oh the morning sickness from drinking a whole gallon of OJ!

Good choices on the cravings..they can be so miserable until you get exactly what it wants to eat!

PS I didnt even know you were Pregnant! Congrats!!

Okay, so I completely missed the pregnancy announcement! Congratulations! You look awesome!

Loved this post. Cravings really can be met with real food. I especially like that peach pie substitution. It is amazing how you can take the sugar out of so many fruit-based recipes and still get a similar result. The fruit is definitely enough.

    Amanda – 60 lbs.?? Whoa!

Becky – Ugh. Really having a hard time with greens from the get go. Kale chips are about all I can manage.

Emily – They take you hostage :-)

Erica – Let me know if you try it!

Cyn – Thanks! And that’s hilarious. Really? 3 times a day??

Lori – Thanks :-) I think if I craved cheese doodles I’d be stumped for a substitute, but so far I haven’t craved any serious junk!

Cravings with Sophia = nothing. Everything tasted horrible. FYI – This child is as picky as they come. The list of “won’t eat” far out numbers the list of “will eat.”

Cravings with Harrison = Alcohol. I am talking gin martinis and I am not a big drinker. Non-pregnant, I might enjoy one drink a week. Obviously, I did not indulge my craving.

Cravings with Evan = Poutine (yup french fries with gravy and cheese curds), grilled cheese sandwiches and cheesecake ice cream. Interestingly enough Evan is a child who need extra calories for health reasons.

Post pregnancy with all three – Tomato based beef and barely soup was a staple. There was something so satisfying about it. Also Japanese seaweed salad was a favorite post pregnancy.

Enjoy your pregnancy and as you already know listen to your body. rest when you need it. Eat what it craves.

PS – Your yoga practice will be incredibly helpful during delivery :)

I have heard that sugar cravings and carb cravings are a result of needing more protein in your pregnancy, so getting the steak was probably a good idea. I know it is challenging when you don’t eat so much meat. I am the same way, but during my last pregnancy, I definitely craved it more than normal. I ate things like roasted almonds with raisins, nut milk, raw, soaked, and dehydrated buckwheat (“buckwheaties”), hummus, green smoothies, and yoghurt for extra protein. One good recipe I found during pregnancy was to take 2/3 cup dried figs, 2/3 cup plain yoghurt, and 2 tbsp sesame seeds and mix them all together. I also threw in some buckwheaties and stevia for good measure. Supposedly, it supplies all of your calcium requirements while pregnant for the day. It looks like a huge quanity, but i always ate it ALL- no problem :) I just had it yesterday as well, found out it is good for nursing too!

What a cute belly! I love it :D I have two of my own, so I really know what the cravings are like. Awful! They just don’t go away, and they can’t be resisted like normal cravings(at least ones I get). Sorry I have no helpful tips for your cravings, best of luck!

  • Esther

Thanks for this awesome recipe, Michelle! Since the detox, on most mornings I cook an apple with cinnamon and a little water to add to my oatmeal, and it never even occurred to me to switch it up a bit to make a yummy dessert!

PS – the Butcher Shop in the South End is a great place for solo dining + delish farm raised meat. Now I want a steak…

I know exactly what you are talking about…. and it is such a complex for a health counselor, isn’t it??? Had the SAME conversation with myself about the steak in the middle of the day, by myself… and it was totally worth it to indulge! I am 33 weeks now, and I am looking forward to “feeling” like eating normal again soon. Weird cravings come and go still, but the worst of it was definatly in the first 3 months for me. Hope the best for you-it’s a grand adventure, and I haven’t even seen my babe’s face yet! My worst craving of yet….really cold watermelon… not so bad I tell myself. Thank God for fresh food and finding creative alternatives out of peaches! Much love, Stephanie

  • Maria

First off…CONGRATULATIONS on your pregnancy…what a lucky baby that will be with a healthy couple of parents for guidance. Second..you ROCK Michelle. I love how you show the ability to eat real food even while pregnant…keep spreading the word :-) .

I recently subscribed to your blog and I’m loving it.

The way you handled your pie craving by making a stove-top ‘filling’ minus all the preservatives and sugar is amazing! I will definitely keep your story in mind the next time I come up against a crazy craving (i’m not even pregnant yet!).

All the best with your pregnancy :)

  • http://thewitchykitchen.blogspot.com/ Stella

Ugh, I can’t imagine those types of cravings, Michelle. I wish I could though;) I’m sure cravings will fall soon judging by your tummy size. And then you, especially you, will have full control again.
Ooh, that peach dessert sounds awesome btw!

I’ve been pregnant 5 times and there were different cravings each time but there were two that were constant throughout all 5 of them. One was coleslaw…I hate coleslaw but loved it when I was pregnant and hated it again once I gave birth. Weird.

The other was steak. I never really liked it much but I craved it like crazy when I was growing my babies. I totally get it.
