tripleline Breakfast scramble (Egg free, dairy free, soy free): Detox recipe 1 of 21

Welcome to Day 1! Let’s start off on the right foot – and that means a healthy breakfast. There’s no way you can grab a muffin or eat a bowl of cereal and feel your best. So we’re gonna lose all those processed, sugar-laden morning options and go for something filling, nourishing and delicious.

Some of us will do great with a big bowl of oats. Or a banana.

But some of us (ahem…) might want more protein. Something a bit more filling.

You may have heard of tofu scrambles, and those are an ok way to go. (I’m not a huge fan of soy. If you are, please buy organic.) But the idea of a scramble that kind of feels like eggs? It’s fab.

Get back on track after a big life change

I remember when my son was so tiny, I’d nurse him in one arm while typing with the other. Now his legs flop over mine, his free arm plays with my hair, and he takes occasional breaks to clap his hands. Then he’s off and running again. As he eats more food, we nurse less. I hear that eventually some babies lose interest in nursing…we’ll see how that goes!

Anyway, I’m noticing how many interesting habits I’ve picked up through this whole pregnancy/breastfeeding thing. I’m assuming a big life change throws off anyone’s game, right? Time to bring back some mindfulness. For me it’s this:

How to make your own deodorant (and why it’s worth trying)

deodorant How to make your own deodorant (and why its worth trying)

Despite my love of kale and yoga, I have always sworn to shave my legs and wear “real” deodorant. It’s been one way I define balance in my increasingly crunchy life.

Years ago, I read an article about making homemade deodorant out of natural ingredients. It especially piqued my interest when I heard a nursing mom note that she felt better about wearing natural deodorant because baby’s wandering fingers often ended up in her armpit.

The ingredients in your standard stick are far from healthy. My son got his hands on mine once, and as I attempted to clean the white stuff out of his mouth I remembered reading how aluminum (the ingredient that prevents perspiration) is also linked to things like breast cancer and Alzheimer’s. Is that true? One of my readers is a breast cancer doctor and disputes the claim on that one. Whew. But I do know that the ingredient label on deodorant or pretty much any self-care product can be a scary, chemically place to be. Oy.

Anyway, I held out. Sweating and smelling are two things I’m not particularly interested in doing!

Between pregnancy and childbirth, it’s been a couple of years since I took part in my own detox. I wasn’t sure I’d even run it in 2012, until I noticed something:

I feel kinda tired. Sluggish. My skin’s a little gray, my digestion’s a little unhappy. You know I eat well, but pregnancy and early motherhood can take its toll on the best of us! A little too much chocolate here, a little too much pizza there, not quite enough time on my yoga mat, and…bam. I remember why I rely on this detox so much!

Ever feel stuck in a “blah” place? A bit of a rut?

Yeah, I hear ya. But no worries. When you change your food, your life automatically changes with it. It has to – your food literally becomes the tissues of your body and brain. Are you ready to create change and start feeling confident, energized and focused?

It all starts here.

Looking ahead: 14 somewhat unusual ways to get a fresh start

freshstart Looking ahead: 14 somewhat unusual ways to get a fresh start

Man alive. 2011 was a year I’ll never forget. For those of you who have been following along – thank you, thank you, thank you. For your presence, support, and continuity through a string of changes in my life and business.

Ain’t it funny how much can change, yet inside we’re still the same people?

My husband and I talked about it, and after a really chaotic year we are going to just stay put. Yeah. This year needs to be about stillness. Inertia. Just a wee bit. Gathering ourselves, catching our breath. Watching Danny grow and absorbing it all.

Are you a resolution maker? Regardless, everyone can benefit from a clean slate in different areas of life. A fresh start. Here are a bunch of different ways to go about it. Do something that will feel good, something that makes your heart sing a little zippy tune.

Mango Green Smoothie: Detox recipe 18 of 21

3 Mango Green Smoothie: Detox recipe 18 of 21

Welcome to 21 Days of Detoxing! Whether you are one of our amazingly motivated participants or just interested in eating clean, whole, real food – boy do I have some recipes for you! From now ’til May 21st I’ll be featuring a delicious detox-friendly recipe each day. (And if you want to get in on the detox magic I have a Do It Yourself version available – right here.)

Let’s talk about why I don’t like Trader Joe’s.

For some reason, everyone thinks they sell healthy food. Newsflash – they don’t. Not really. Try finding one of their boxed or canned products without added sugars or refined grains. Half the dried fruit has sulfites or sugar or something gross added. Very little is organic. They don’t sell a peanut butter that isn’t homogenized. They sell a lot of soy-based packaged food. The grass fed beef leaves something to be desired.

Ok, now let’s talk about why I LOVE Trader Joe’s.

Murakami’s Daikon Stir Fry: Detox Recipe 16 of 21

From now ’til May 21st I’ll be featuring a delicious detox-friendly recipe each day. (And if you want to get in on the detox magic I have a Do It Yourself version available – right here.)

I first heard of daikon when I saw Haruki Murakami speak at MIT. Have you read any Murakami? Crazy stuff. Anyway, he talked about carrying a daikon home from the market and how it was so big it stuck out the top of the bag. Random, I know.

The next time I heard of daikon was in a macrobiotic cookbook. Macrobiotics is just one of the dietary theories that I studied at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and while I don’t subscribe to it 100%, they sure have some cool ideas. As for daikon, it’s known to aid digestion and help clean the body and is used quite a bit with macrobiotics. Really, it’s just a type of radish. So don’t be afraid!

Maybe Murakami was making something like this dish the night he carried home his daikon?

(By the way, find daikon at Whole Foods in the produce section.)

Chickpea Patties: Detox Recipe 12 of 21

Sometimes people miss having a hunka hunka burnin’ meat on their plate. Vegetarian entrees tend to be more free-form, less structured items. But here’s a solution to try: Chickpea Patties. (Although if you’re like me you’ll just make ‘em Sloppy Joe style…) I’d try these with a smear of tahini on top, or any salad dressing of choice, over brown rice or salad greens. Or maybe between two slices of millet bread, if you want to go the sandwich route.

Roasted Red Pepper Sauce: Detox Recipe 2 of 21

I cannot stress enough the value of a good sauce! Think about it. A bowl of brown rice is pretty dull. You can add veggies ’till you’re blue in the face and it’s still kinda dull.

Well, that stinks Michelle. You promised that clean, whole food could be tasty.

Hang on, Buster! I’m getting to it. See here’s why you need a dressing or sauce that knocks your socks off. It turns dull to delicious! This recipe is perfect to have on hand for your rice bowls, your quinoa pasta, your veggie platters, whatev. Make a batch and keep it in the fridge – and I dare say you could save yourself some time by buying roasted red peppers instead of roasting yourself, but hey, homemade is always best.

New dietary regulations for public safety employees. Hell yes.

reagan New dietary regulations for public safety employees. Hell yes.

Did you hear about the incident at Reagan National Airport last week? Here’s what happened: 2 planes landed without assistance because the controller on duty was asleep.

Oops.

It’s not like I’ve never napped while working before. When I was still in advertising, we had a whole room dedicated to napping – they called it the Recovery Room. Excellent for hangovers.

However, I was not an air traffic controller.

I’m happy that, according to NPR, “the incident has renewed concern about the potential safety consequences of controllers suffering from fatigue, a longstanding concern.”

Which leads me to wonder…what about all employees with important safety-related jobs like this? Firefighters? Police? Heck, when I had my c-section, the doctor had been on duty for like, 18 hours straight. Eek.
