Thanks for the outpouring of support since my post about postpartum depression. I feel like we can all really make a difference by being more open about hard times. So thank you for all the comments, suggestions, and most of all for sharing it with women in your life. I’m feeling better and better!
So, we all know there’s no going wrong with your little black dress. Right? Dress it up, dress it down, make it worth the $350 you spent on it at Banana Republic, or the $29.99 at Marshall’s, whatever.
Well there’s one way to go wrong I guess. By not having one! Duh. I don’t. I have a navy blue dress that comes pretty close. I wonder if that still fits? It’s not exactly nursing-friendly with that zipper in the back. Um. I also have a black wrap dress but the strap got accidentally sucked into the vacuum cleaner once and is kind of shredded. Oops.
Maybe I’m barking up the wrong tree with a fashion analogy. Says the girl wearing a nursing tank 2 sizes too big.
Here’s what I really want to talk about:
Salmon.
Because salmon was my little black dress this week. It fit perfectly.

When I was studying graphic design, I visited a design studio in Rotterdam who used an extensive questionnaire with its clients. They asked all sorts of questions: If your brand was a car what kind of car would it be? Stuff like that.
Well folks, if I were a shoe I’d be Earthies. Hands down. They are a spinoff from Earth’s line of truly healthy, comfortable footwear. Sure, these Earthies don’t have the reverse heel technology, they ARE after all high heels. But MAN are they comfy. “Yes, you can look amazing and take care of yourself!” they seem to shout.
You mean I don’t have to be a 100% crunchy granola lookin’ momma? How dreamy.

What goes in your body? Good, clean, whole, real food? Sweet.
Ok, what goes on your body? Natural skincare products? (Remember this important class I hosted on the topic? I hope you were listening.)
But what else goes on your body?
I’m talking about your clothes. Your sheets. Your towels. I mean, have you ever thought about the fabric that touches you all day and night? It’s just one of many ways that our bodies become overwhelmed with toxins and in need of a fresh start now and then.

Tonight is the premiere of a little documentary I was filmed for last summer. Way cool! I mean – professional makeup, lighting, direction, the works. And now, a premiere at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge! If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, watch it here.
Someone, please tell me, what on earth am I supposed to wear?
Wait – before you answer let me tell you the craziest part. Tonight at the premiere, the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric is coming to cover the story and they’ve asked for an interview. With me. What the WHAT? So please keep your fingers crossed for me so I don’t flub my words or have a giant piece of spinach caught in my teeth or something.
And the question remains: What do I wear?
Dressing well is more than how you look, it affects how you feel. Since I try not to wear high heels for the sake of my feet and back, I’ve found it a little difficult to dress up. But surely I’m not condemned to a life in yoga pants?
Let’s talk a little more about dressing in a not-so-subtle segue to this recipe I’m dying to tell you about. Really, acorn squash is delicious by itself, but after months of squash recipes this one really shook things up for me. All because of the dressing! I’ll link you to the real recipe in a second but basically all you have to do is:
1. Cut squash
2. Roast
3. Top with dressing
Love that. In this dish the sweet, dense flavor of squash is perked up like springtime with a chile-lime vinaigrette. It’s not my recipe, but I have officially adopted it and I encourage you to do the same! And then…what other squashes can we roast and top with dressings? It makes my chef hat spin on end with possibilities like pumpkin with caesar or kabocha with sesame miso. Mmmmmm.
Now if only I could dress myself.
Get the recipe here.

Here’s a story about pain:
The joints in my toes hurt from years of wearing high heels and dancing in pointe shoes.
Here’s another story about pain:
When I drink coffee or eat white flour products it makes my stomach hurt.
And another one:
Anxiety attacks keep me from doing things I love.
These are 3 stories about pain that I ignored for years. I just suffered. Hello, victim! I was a person who had feet that hurt and a belly that was always angry. I was a person lying down at home in the middle of a sunny summer day because my anxiety was too powerful to let me go anywhere or do anything. I was trapped.
Sounds ridiculous, right? But what are your stories – what causes pain in your life? Maybe, like me, there are things you do every day that continuously hurt you. It could be food you put in your belly, or people in your life, or thoughts in your mind.
Can you imagine a pain-free existence?
I talk a lot about making healthy food choices and nourishing our bodies. It’s true – you ARE what you eat. So eat well and be well. But what about the rest of our lives? I have tried so many diets…I’ve given up sugar, coffee, white flour, heck for awhile I gave up cooked food! I’ve tried eating vegetarian and vegan and macrobiotic…and the experimenting finally worked! Now I eat real food, not processed stuff. And I can go all day – everyday! – without a bellyache. But you know what was harder than all of that diet stuff combined?
To stop wearing high heels and start wearing supportive shoes.
AUUUUGHHHHHH!!!! No way! I could eat seaweed and dust for heaven’s sake but I was NOT going to wear ugly shoes!!!
So, see? I chose pain.
I wore my heels, or maybe dinky little flats. And with every step the pain got worse but I was not willing to give up *gasp* – my shoes!
It tooks years before I walked into the Walking Company practically wearing a disguise. How embarrassing I thought, to be so young and trying on shoes like this! But as soon as I sank into a pair of Earth shoes I understood that this was a choice I had to make. Pain vs. No pain.
Earth shoes not only relieved the pain in my toes, they also let me lower back relax in a way I didn’t know existed. I started with one pair, then another and another. Recently, I found another brand, Sofft. Sofft makes some cute styles that are 100x more supportive than my old shoes.
Pictured above is some of my new footwear. I just bought a pair of heels from Sofft that do a great job keeping weight in my heels instead of toes. I can wear them comfortably for a few hours, like this past weekend I wore them to a wedding. But then I’m back to my clunky heavenly Earth shoes.
So if you see me and you think my shoes are ugly…well, it took years but I finally don’t care! I’m living without pain.
This post is part of Real Food Wednesdays because I believe we can nourish ourselves with every choice we make.

Yoga and consumerism should be inherently at odds so I can only say: Lululemon pants make your butt look great. Not just yours, mine too. Everyone’s. Some styles are reversible so it’s like getting 2 pants in 1. And the moisture-wicking fabric makes hot yoga classes a happier place. Ok, now you can make up your own mind over whether or not it’s worth it to drop bank on this stuff. You can continue to practice in a tweety bird t-shirt and your husband’s sweatpants that shrunk in the dryer. I still do that too. It’s a yoga mat, not a runway. But did I mention that Lulu will hem your pants for free? And that they sell lots of stuff suitable to athletics of all kinds, for men and women?

The Toronto-based company just opened a great big location in downtown Boston. And I (along with some other friends from South Boston Yoga) helped kick off their opening weekend with some window yoga. It was pretty fun, although the space was tight and I banged into the glass more than once. Also caught quite a bit of attention from shoppers passing by…the comments were pretty interesting to listen to: The excited “Whoa, cool!”, the bitter “Now that’s not yoga, that’s just showing off” and the interested “I could probably do that.” For me, it was just pretty hilarious to try and keep focused with people’s noses pressed up to the glass.

Ok I don’t even know how I ended up on the website for gDiapers, but that’s what blog-surfing will get you. It looks like a great product – a reusable outer diaper with inner plastic-free absorbtion pad that you can trash, flush or compost. Really? That’s cool. Having zero babies myself, I’ll just file this away for another day. But maybe some of you would like to swaddle your little ones in ecofriendliness?
Couldn’t help but wonder what the grown-up version of these are… My friend recently challenged herself to a 30 Day No Trash Challenge and one obstacle was the monthly visitor. Maybe gDiaper will create some kind of gCapris in the future?

I seriously wore heels every day in college, maybe even high school. I remember joking that my 3″ black heeled boots were my ‘rain boots’ because they kept me up and out of puddles. There’s nothing worse than a great outfit with bad shoes. The image that comes to mind is a formal dress with mary jane flats …ewwwwwwwww….
Anyway, here I am, trying my damndest to find shoes that (shudder shudder I sound like my mom) “have proper support” and still look cute. It’s an impossible task.
But I have found Earth shoes. With their negative heel technology and super supportive soles I don’t even have to wear my orthotics. (Yes, I’m a ninety year old woman.) It’s amazing how your feet can get messed up from years of bad footwear. And maybe a few years of dancing on pointe shoes. Now I look around and check out everyone’s bunions, hammertoes and the like. It ain’t pretty. Bad feet lead to knee problems and hip problems as the issue moves up your leg. It’s the kind of pain that will turn a stiletto lover into the owner of some very attractive clogs.
Well, at least Earth has some decent options. They even have a line of vegan footwear.
