Welcome to 21 Days of Detoxing! Whether you are one of our amazingly motivated participants or just interested in eating clean, whole, real food – boy do I have some recipes for you! From now ’til May 21st I’ll be featuring a delicious detox-friendly recipe each day. (And if you want to get in on the detox magic I have a Do It Yourself version available – right here.)

Whether you have a garden or CSA, you may be inundated with greens right now. Awesome! But you gotta use it before it goes bad.

Pesto to the rescue!

Ok, maybe you don’t have a CSA or a garden…that’s ok. I wish I had a garden. Wait, I wish I knew how to garden. And our CSA doesn’t start for another couple of weeks.

Doesn’t matter. You and I can still make pesto from whatever looks good at Whole Foods. They didn’t have any arugula this week, or watercress (WTF, WF?) so I got lots of chard. Whatever, getting your dark, leafy greens daily is a super important part of a healthy diet and as long as you rotate what kind you’re eating you’ll be in great shape. For this recipe, you can really use any type of greens you like!

Chickpea Patties: Detox Recipe 12 of 21

Welcome to 21 Days of Detoxing! Whether you are one of our amazingly motivated participants or just interested in eating clean, whole, real food – boy do I have some recipes for you! Sometimes people miss having a hunka hunka burnin’ meat on their plate. Vegetarian entrees tend to be more free-form, less structured items. But here’s a solution to try: Chickpea Patties. (Although if you’re like me you’ll just make ‘em Sloppy Joe style…) I’d try these with a smear of tahini on top, or any salad dressing of choice, over brown rice or salad greens. Or maybe between two slices of millet bread, if you want to go the sandwich route.

Simple pleasures, simple snacks

flowers Simple pleasures, simple snacks

I must have been lugging the drying rack full of cloth diapers out into the backyard when I spotted these beauties. They kinda stopped me in my tracks – something so simple and pretty, so effortless. They’d just appeared out of nowhere.

Stopped. Smiled. I might have even taken a deep breath.

Been kind of crazy around here, if just in my mind. I don’t know, something about a newborn keeps a mom on the edge of her seat. At least this mom. I’ve been appreciating more than ever the small things that bring a smile in between feedings, crying fits and poopy diapers.

A hot shower. A cup of tea. Gorgeous flowers in my neglected backyard. Mmmm.

And this. Popcorn.

Fake it ’til you make it: Indian food

korma Fake it til you make it: Indian food

I’m off dairy again. Had to happen. During my pregnancy I craved milk, cheese, yogurt. And that’s fine because in organic, full fat, unsweetened form that stuff is great for growing a baby!

But come springtime, it’s not so good for my sinuses. Nope. Dairy creates mucus in the body, and I definitely do not need more mucus in the spring. Another reason to get off the white stuff is that milk protein can be notoriously difficult for little ones to digest. By staying off dairy, hopefully Danny and I both will be free of tummy upset and stuffed noses. Hooray!

Have you ever gone off dairy? Do you find it difficult?

Go on a bender for St. Patty’s Day

pina Go on a bender for St. Pattys Day

I’m on a bender. Every day I’ve got my drinky drink blended up and swallowed down before you can say “diaper change.” See, after my c-section I was feeling really icky. Unable to move for a few days, full of IV fluid and drugs…boy oh boy did I want something to make me feel better when I got home from the hospital!

That’s where it began.

I’m talking green smoothies, people.

While the rest of the world chugs beer and paints glittery shamrocks on their cheeks, I’m celebrating St. Patty’s Day my own way.

Ravishing radishes

radishes Ravishing radishes

About once a month I have a marathon coaching day, where I set up on the couch and talk to 7 or 8 clients in a row. Whew! These aren’t my regular clients though – they’re my student groups from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. As a graduate in the Immersion program I’ve committed myself to these guys for the past 6 months or so, acting as a health coach/business coach/open ear/mentor/friend.

It’s kind of cool to go through IIN again, this time from a new perspective. Hey, I know a lot of you are interested in IIN because I get a ton of emails about it – if you want the scoop, check out their upcoming Q&A webinar on Tuesday June 8th. Sign up here and please tell them you heard about it from Michelle Pfennighaus.

But I will tell you – these marathon sessions are a long day on the phone for me! I have a break for lunch, during which I whipped up a really easy seasonal lunch. It’s one of those things where you look in the refrigerator and just piece something together! I started with the radishes I picked up yesterday from the farmer’s market. Most people think of radishes as raw slices for a salad, but I love to cook mine in butter and include the greens. I find them much tastier and more versatile this way.

Nutty Chickpea Roasted Salad

RoastedSalad1 Nutty Chickpea Roasted Salad

Every tree down our street is in full bloom, making me feel like I’m in a movie. I know it’s just nature’s way but I think it is so darn cool how they all know how to bloom at the exact same time. No meetings, no email, no Skype-ing. The trees just do what they do, every year.

I guess in our own human ways we also come alive each spring too. Like, WOOHOOOO IT’S NICE OUT! In my yoga classes I’m teaching a lot of heart-opening postures because it feels good to backbend and feel wide open in the sunny weather. To bloom!

The net result? I’m inspired me to relax and enjoy life a bit more. It’s been a really busy winter – a really busy year. My one year anniversary of Find Your Balance has come and gone and I barely had time to acknowledge it. Since starting this business I’ve done a million things I’ve never done before – one after another after another. Whew!

So when it came to planning food for the week I was like…huh…dinners…hmmm….i dunno…

I went to Whole Foods and stared into my cart until something came together. Seriously, I added and took away bunches of carrots, peppers, beans and greens until my brain finally formulated a vague plan. (I do not recommend this technique unless you have an extra hour to spend at the store. I must have looked like a crazy lady putting the same head of celery in my cart 3 times and taking it out again.)

When the mind says ” You can’t have a Cadbury egg until you finish the bag of hint of lime tostitos” you know it’s time for a cleanse.

Ahh, truer words have never been spoken. This is a quote from one of my friends on facebook – I saw it today and it spoke to me. Here’s why:

I spend pretty much all day every day giving advice on how to eat well. Get more greens, cut out sugar, kick the caffeine habit, etc. The problem is that I am also a human being. As such, I enjoy cadbury eggs and hint of lime tostitos as much as the next person.
