I haven’t been truly sick in over two years. I mean, sure, a sniffle here and there, but nothing that has me on the couch for a week with a box of tissues.
Let’s see, what was different two years ago? First of all, I was still working in advertising, a daily drain on my being. I was eating whole foods, though mainly a vegan diet and not enough dark, leafy greens. Hmmmm. And I rode the subway every day.
I got sick fairly often back then, come to think of it.
Well, this week I started to feel a bit run down. Dragging. Not hard to imagine given pregnancy, moving and trying to sell our place. On Tuesday night my head felt a little thick, my throat a little sore. I woke up the same way. Uh-oh. Not now, I thought. I can’t get sick now! I have open houses to deal with, and packing and we’re going to go to Kripalu next week before Thanksgiving and on top of it all I can’t/don’t want to take medicine!
Oy.
But today, two days later, I’m feeling much better. And that thickness in my head has retreated instead of blossoming into a full cold or flu. How’d I do it?
Ever had a bad haircut? I’m assuming yes, especially if your hair is on the shorter side or if you’ve had to change hair stylists. UGH. That’s what happened to me a few weeks ago when my stylist changed locations and I couldn’t find him. I was desperate after seeing a picture of my pregnant self…I was like, man, I could at least fix my hair! So I went and trusted a totally new person to give me a cut and that was a very, very bad idea.
Anyway, I ended up in tears when I got home and realized that even my beloved Chi straight iron couldn’t make sense of these feathery layers.
Unfortunately, I had to make a video. And though I was psyched to be asked to contribute to Harvard Pilgrim’s wellness site…I was less psyched about showing off this hair.
Want to know one of my biggest secrets for eating well?
I don’t keep desserts in the house. No cookies, no cakes, no candy.
That’s not to say I don’t EAT cookies, cakes or candy. I do. But I don’t buy them or keep them readily available in my kitchen. Out with friends, sure. At a birthday party, ok. But on a random Thursday night while watching The Office? No way! If I had cookies in the house I’d demolish the whole bag and I’d get sucked into a pattern of eating that I have finally broken free of!
One of the questions I get most often is, “How do I satisfy my sweet tooth?” It’s a question that has come up a lot during the past couple of weeks as my detox group sought ways to keep processed sugar out of their diet.
