various+005a Chocolate Hazelnut Banana Ice Cream with Sea Salt: Detox Recipe 10 of 21

Welcome to 21 Days of Detoxing! Whether you are one of our amazingly motivated participants or just interested in eating clean, whole, real food – boy do I have some recipes for you! From now ’til May 21st I’ll be featuring a delicious detox-friendly recipe each day. (And if you want to get in on the detox magic I have a Do It Yourself version available – right here.)

Every time I run this detox I hear the same thing – THANK GOD FOR BANANA ICE CREAM! Yeah, man. It’s that good. When you’re not eating processed sugar you really start to appreciate the incredible sweet/creamy properties of the everyday banana.

But hold on there! We’ve got something even better today. One of our detox participants has her own spin on banana ice cream and I think it’s brilliant. Just because you’re eating clean doesn’t mean you don’t get dessert…it just means your dessert is real food too and you’re going to feel good tomorrow.

Killer.

Hiker’s Hemp Chia Dream: Detox Recipe 9 of 21

chia seeds Hiker’s Hemp Chia Dream: Detox Recipe 9 of 21

Welcome to 21 Days of Detoxing! Whether you are one of our amazingly motivated participants or just interested in eating clean, whole, real food – boy do I have some recipes for you! From now ’til May 21st I’ll be featuring a delicious detox-friendly recipe each day. (And if you want to get in on the detox magic I have a Do It Yourself version available – right here.)

Superfoods kind of piss me off. I think…well, sure they’re nutritionally dense and all. But so is a carrot. So is kale. Or almonds.

Eating real food is the point. Superfoods…well I tend to think they’re unnecessary (and pricey!) but that’s just me, ok? Go on with your bad goji berry self, if you like ‘em!

Today’s detox recipe makes excellent use of chia seeds for their pudding-making properties, aside from super nutritional benefits. That’s pretty great. I bet you could make this one with like, raisins and pumpkin seeds if you wanted to save a few bucks. Just sayin’. It’s gonna be delicious any way you do it!

Hiker’s Hemp Chia Dream Pudding
1 small container of unflavored coconut water (like single serve Zico)
1/4 cup goji berries
1/4 – 1/2 cup chia seeds
1/4 cup hulled hemp seeds
chopped up fruit or nuts of choice
cinnamon to taste
raw cacao powder or raw cacao nibs to taste

Throw everything in a bowl… mix it up and let it sit for 25 min or so. Or make it the night before and let it sit in the fridge.

Today’s recipe is from Dave at http://ridgefieldwellness.com.

Baked Mochi Stuffed with Cashew Cheese and Tomatoes: Detox Recipe 3 of 21

Baked Mochi Stuffed with Cashew Cheese and Tomatoes: Detox Recipe 3 of 21

Welcome to 21 Days of Detoxing! Whether you are one of our amazingly motivated participants or just interested in eating clean, whole, real food – boy do I have some recipes for you! From now ’til May 21st I’ll be featuring a delicious detox-friendly recipe each day. (And if you want to join in and get the whole detox manual, cookbook and access to our online forum, it’s ok to start a few days late – click here and sign up!)

Now we’re gettin’ crazy. That’s right. Mochi is like, the 7th level of Whole Foods Heaven. No not the Mochi ice cream treats at Trader Joes, I don’t know why they call it that. Real mochi is made from brown rice! But don’t be scared. This stuff is really interesting, easy and inexpensive. (Find it in the refrigerator case, btw.)

Baked Mochi Stuffed with Cashew Cheese and Tomatoes
Serves 4-6
1 Package of Mochi
1 cup of cashews
1 small/medium clove of garlic
1 Tbl. lemon juice
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup water
10 cherry tomatoes
Tamari

Preheat oven to 450.

1. Cut mochi into 1″ squares and bake for 8-10 minutes.
2. In the meantime, make the cashew cheese by combining the cashews, garlic and salt in a food processor and puree until coarsely ground. Add the water and lemon juice and puree again until mixed well. This should be the texture of ricotta cheese.
2. Slice cherry tomatoes in half.
3. When mochi is done baking, allow to cool enough to touch and then take a paring knife and make a small slice in the middle to create an opening for the stuffing.
4. Spoon in about 1tsp of cashew cheese and drizzle inside with a little tamari. Add the tomato and serve. These are best if served immediately but can sit for up to a half hour.

This recipe is from my friend and talented chef Laura, at http://laurachionchio.blogspot.com

Vegan, Gluten Free *Yet Delicious* Mac-n-Cheese: Detox Recipe 1 of 21

Welcome to 21 Days of Detoxing! Whether you are one of our amazingly motivated participants or just interested in eating clean, whole, real food – boy do I have some recipes for you! First of all, let’s just admit that changing your diet can be challenging. It’s Day 1. It’s gonna feel weird to skip that morning muffin. Of course. But the thing is, with time, this is all going to seem very normal. I promise!

Today’s recipe is a big winner, meaning that my husband loved it. And to win over him on a vegan mac-n-cheese is like…whoa. Seriously difficult. My tactic is to not say “Honey, I made mac-n-cheeeeeese!” Instead I say, “Honey I made a creamy noodle recipe” and let him say “Oh it’s kinda like mac-n-cheese.”

It’s all about setting expectations.

Go on a bender for St. Patty’s Day

pina Go on a bender for St. Pattys Day

I’m on a bender. Every day I’ve got my drinky drink blended up and swallowed down before you can say “diaper change.” See, after my c-section I was feeling really icky. Unable to move for a few days, full of IV fluid and drugs…boy oh boy did I want something to make me feel better when I got home from the hospital!

That’s where it began.

I’m talking green smoothies, people.

While the rest of the world chugs beer and paints glittery shamrocks on their cheeks, I’m celebrating St. Patty’s Day my own way.

The secret of 2 tennis balls

Have you had a good massage lately?

I’ve had great massages and so-so massages…and some downright useless massages. I’ll tell you right now, if you’re pregnant, ask if they have a special pregnancy foam thing so you can be on your stomach. So much nicer than lying on your side! Man, I could really go for a massage like that right now…

pregnancy bolster The secret of 2 tennis balls

But what about the days or months (or years) between trips to the massage table? I personally get a great deal of use out of 2 tennis balls and a sock to help work tension out of my back. It’s really easy! Check out the video above to see how to do it.

Dealing with nagging sugar cravings

mochi Dealing with nagging sugar cravings

The trees are down, the baked goods are eaten, the necessary gifts have been exchanged…I’d say the holiday season is official over.

Except for one thing. One nagging little reminder.

If you’re like most people (including myself) the holidays included some sugary yumminess. And that’s ok. It’s cool. We enjoyed it. But the problem? It’s weeks later and the sugary urges are still there. The cravings. The continued permission to indulge coming through in whispered voices in our heads.

It’s that sugar-powered hamster wheel again, folks. And once you get on, man oh man it’s hard to get off! For the past couple of weeks I’ve noticed that around 3pm I can’t get my hand out of the chocolate chips. If I had any other sweets in the house, they’d be calling my name too.

So. What do you do? How do you break free? Well, certainly not with guilt. And definitely not with deprivation or punishment.

“I will not eat sugar. I will not eat sugar. Ok, if I eat sugar then I’m not allowed to eat anything else the rest of the day. Blah blah blah.”

Phooey on that.

Tips for replacing the regular ol’ white flour and sugar

christmascookies Tips for replacing the regular ol white flour and sugar

It’s baking time! Based on survey results I’m entirely making up, half of you are in the kitchen today covered in flour. Yay! What a fun time of year.

Baking Christmas cookies is not just about the cookies for me. I only bake my grandma’s cookies, and I only do it because Christmas doesn’t feel the same without her around. Ok, ok, I also do it because I LOVE cookies. But the best part is carrying on the traditions I remember from childhood.

Of course, I make some teensy changes to the recipes. If I’m going to eat a boatload of cookies, they need to be closer to real food – meaning whole grains and natural sweeteners. But honestly, I’ve found that using whole ingredients lends a more full bodied flavor to baked goods. White sugar is a hit of sweet on your tongue like cocaine to the brain! But pure maple syrup has true flavor. Think about it.

By the request of one of my friends, here are some tips for upgrading your holiday baking. Depending on how tied you are to the outcome, you might tentatively adjust the flours and that’s it. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous you can completely recreate your holiday favorites. It’s fun!

A big ol’ invitation for life to get better

ovenknobs A big ol invitation for life to get better

Change is good. It’s a mirror, giving us the opportunity to see that we are that strong, that smart, that powerful, that fortunate.

So why do we resist it?

I really, really did not want to move. I didn’t want to pack, or leave friends, or deal with setting up the cable all over again. Most of all, I didn’t want to be uncomfortable. And I’m pregnant, dammit! *Insert whine here*

But oh man, it all sounds like a lesson I learned in yoga. When you’re uncomfortable, growth happens. Comfort zone = stagnation. Pain = too much, too soon. But feeling uncomfortable? That’s the sweet spot where good things can unravel.

So stop being such a baby! Change is a big ol’ invitation for life to get better, even if it doesn’t seem that way at first.

The secret of the pomegranate

Ahhh. The pomegranate. Recently it’s got some press as a superfood…have you heard about it? It’s kind of a bunch of crap. A pomegranate is good for you, but so is a grapefruit. Or blueberries. Or an pear, whatever. All fruit has antioxidants and vitamins. So don’t buy into the hubbub. In fact, POM was just given a bit of a smackdown by the FTC because of its arguably false advertising claims.

I think it’s hilarious because the last project I worked on at my old advertising job was for a Cran-Pomegranate juice by Ocean Spray. They made us call it a “Super Fruit” and make as many vague health-related statements as we could. 100% Bulls**t. It’s full of sugar, that’s all you need to know about most bottled juice.
