Let’s make friends with a new grain today, shall we? As counter-intuitive as this may sound, buckwheat is not wheat. It’s actually not even a grain.

Um…it’s a fruit seed. Who knew? Most of us consider it a grain because it looks like a grain, cooks up like a grain, can be made into flour like a grain…you get my drift.

Why bother with it? Here’s why:

It’s a complete protein
Like some other gluten-free “grains” (quinoa, amaranth, teff…) buckwheat contains all essential amino acids, including the oft-forgotten lysine. I hear cheers from the vegetarian/vegan crowd!

Buckwheat is a gluten-free food
Gluten-free doesn’t necessarily mean spending a lot of money on specialty breads or crackers. Choosing naturally gluten-free foods is the cheaper, healthier option. Continue reading »

tripleline Kick Butt Kale Salad: Detox recipe 12 of 21

Early on, one of this year’s detox ladies told us that she had never had kale before. She’d never prepared it in any way, yet she jumped in and made kale chips! What a fearless woman!

If you’ve never had kale, eating it raw may seem absolutely insane. That’s what I used to think. The secret? Continue reading »

Throughout our school years we all followed a set path, K-12. Even in higher education the courses were mapped out for us, the assignments the same each year. Maybe we went on to get a job with a fixed salary, certain schedule, a boss who told us what to do.

You and I? We wanted more. We wanted to follow our passion, to do work we love. And here we are! Womenpreneurs, mompreneurs, a little scared but mostly excited to hold the reins!

But the truth is, we often get overwhelmed running our own business. We look to others to see how they do it. We seek out formulas and rules to follow. But there are no rules to follow, there is no boss to tell us how its done.

If you know you could be making more money, feeling more fulfilled and making a real difference in the world – it’s time to turn things around.

And you can. In 1 simple step. Continue reading »

tripleline Raw Strawberry Oat Bars: Detox recipe 11 of 21

Ooh I’m excited for this recipe! It’s just perfect with strawberries in season – they’ve always been my favorite. What I really love is watching my son eat them because he pays no mind to the juice dripping down his face, he just loves ‘em. (Somehow he always seems to be wearing a white shirt too, but that’s ok.)

Today’s post comes from Lisa at wholehealthdesigns.com. Like so many of our detoxers this time around, Lisa is a mom and she shared this story to go with her recipe:

I always wanted to be one of those women; you know the ones that seem to love every aspect of raising kids. While I soaked in every ounce of their “baby” smell, tandem breastfed until they weaned naturally, and just purely enjoyed being mommy, I didn’t do too well with the lack of sleep, crazy hormones, and the constant touching and wanting. I felt like my body wasn’t really mine. My poor neglected husband…if he tried to give me a hug, I would say “Not now. I need some alone time.” Continue reading »

During college I worked at a seriously cute little Cuban restaurant in Boston’s Back Bay called Mucho Gusto. That place was awesome (sadly it’s no longer open). While I was there I learned to appreciate the amazing flavors of cuban black beans and a dessert called Tres Leches. Mmmmmm boy.

But my favorite snack to grab in the kitchen were tostones. Almost like french fries, tostones are fried and crispy. Who doesn’t love that? My husband was gobbling these down and gave me a strange look when I told him fried plantains were detox-friendly. Well, not any fried plantains. My fried plantains! Continue reading »

If you’re like me, healthy eating often goes down the tubes when you are confronted with a snacking situation. Lately I’ve been eating lunch around 3pm when my son is napping. That means at around 2pm I’m hunting around for something to tide me over.

I’m grateful to this detox for keeping me accountable during these snacky hours of the day! Instead of cookies or crackers I’m going for things like brown rice cakes, fruit, veggie sticks – and roasted chickpeas. Oh yes.

I’ve wanted to try roasted chickpeas for like…years now. When I finally made them a few weeks ago I was disappointed. They were really bland and dry! Hmmm.

Tried another recipe and had similar results.

Finally I found a recipe for salt and vinegar chickpeas and it hit me – these puppies need some serious flavor to come alive! Here is my rendition, which are a little easier than the original and I’ve added even more flavor. I loved them so much I scarfed ‘em down immediately. Maybe double your batch. Continue reading »

A facial cleanser so natural you could eat it! Enter to win by 5/15/12

giveaway A facial cleanser so natural you could eat it! Enter to win by 5/15/12

Part of my 21 Day Detox is about evaluating our skincare products. Every year, I tell my participants to read the labels on their face wash, moisturizer, and make up. Because typically these products are full of questionable ingredients. Why slather garbage on your skin when you’re being so careful about what you’re eating?

I always give the group suggestions for homemade products. Stuff made from ingredients so pure you wouldn’t hesitate to eat them. Like…coconut oil. It makes a lovely skin moisturizer, right out of the bottle from the grocery store.

But inevitably someone wants to know what brand of products I recommend. And in years past, I haven’t had an answer. Nope. I’d never found a line of skincare that I 100% believed in and felt confident about.

Some of you may remember a few years ago when I held a class on natural skincare. Annmarie Gianni was my guest and we learned a whole lot about how to care for our skin, sans chemicals. Since then I have fallen head over heels in love with Annmarie and her products – I mean, I read the ingredient list and want to give her a hug every time.

This is the stuff you want to put on your skin, folks. Her Aloe-Herb facial cleanser? It’s gorgeous. Here’s what’s inside: Continue reading »

Cold salad. Warm dressing. There, I’ve said it! It’s the secret to amazing meal-sized salads!

Well, at least this salad.

Which I came up with when I had cumin seeds on the brain. Somehow they’d worked their way to the front of my herb shelf, which is strange because I never use them. Staring at me every time I opened the pantry door, they inspired quietly over time until my brain sorted out what to do with them.

As my detoxers know, I believe in the power of a great dressing. Here’s one that doesn’t even require a blender. Continue reading »
