Is your breakfast ruining your skin?

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Most of us immediately focus on that blemish on our chin, the bags under our eyes or the creases in our forehead. And I could sit here and try to tell you to focus on other things – that you are beautiful no matter what your skin is like – but the truth is, I want you to look and pay attention to what you see. (Don’t go beating yourself up about every little imperfection. Promise?)

Skin is a great barometer of our health. Unlike most of your organs, your skin is right there, giving hints about what’s going on inside.

For instance, eczema is almost always a symptom of food allergies – common culprits are eggs, soy and wheat. Acne is related to hormone imbalance or too much sugar/processed food in your diet. Dry skin and wrinkles? Try eating more healthy fats like organic butter and olive oil.

So take a wild guess: Do you know what meal tends to thwart our efforts at clear, smooth skin?


It’s when we are most likely to rely on premade, processed food and eat too much sugar and wheat. Muffins, bagels, boxed cereal – this stuff is working against your beautiful skin! I’m serious!

And then, just to dehydrate our skin even more than it already was first thing in the morning, we drink a big ol’ coffee.

So here’s what you do instead:

1. First thing in the morning, squeeze a lemon into a big glass of water. Drink it. Your body hasn’t had anything to drink in like, 8+ hours. Right? So hydrate with this really cleansing, fresh start to the day.

2. You may not want to wash your face with soap in the morning (too drying) but try using a toning mist and facial oil from Annemarie Gianni. You should be able to read the ingredient lists on your skin products and not get scared – just like with food labels!

3. Breakfast can be fast without resorting to boxed stuff. Lately I’ve been making these easy grab-n-go jars with all sorts of yummy fillings. Bonus: You don’t have to cook anything!

Grab-n-Go Breakfast Jars

Choose a filling, then layer it with toppings, parfait-style.

Filling option #1: Chocolate Protein-Rich Porridge
Adapted from this original recipe.
1 cup buckwheat groats
1 cup walnuts
2 Tbl. raw cacao powder
1 cup chopped fruit, including skin if edible
Juice of 1 orange
1 tsp. vanilla

Soak buckwheat and walnuts in water overnight. Rinse and drain, then blend in food processor with all other ingredients.

Idea: Try combining this chocolate filling with fresh strawberries, unsweetened coconut flakes and raw cacao nibs.

Filling option #2: Light and Creamy Oats
2 cups rolled oats (not instant)
2 cups plain, whole, organic yogurt
1 cup water
1 very ripe banana, mashed

Combine all ingredients well, refrigerate overnight.

Idea: Combine with fresh banana slices, raisins and almond butter.

Follow this morning routine for 30 days and report back on how your skin is looking. I want to know!
